Wilderness Trips
Instruction in canoeing and basic camping skills is offered to all campers in order to prepare them for the many camping opportunities available at Mishawaka.
All campers will have the opportunity to experience an overnight camping trip with their cabin group. These trips are taken on our own Lake Pokegama, the Mississippi River, in the nearby Chippewa National Forest and on other lakes and rivers in our area. Overnight and short camping trips are incorporated as a part of the regular program. For those who wish to participate in one of the longer wilderness trips described below, there is an additional fee.
Campers that are 12 or older have an opportunity to go on a professionally guided white water rafting trip on the nearby St. Louis River. This is a one-day trip that leaves after breakfast and returns before dinner. For campers 12 and older who enroll for at least a four-week stay, there are a variety of extended tripping options. Placement is determined on interest and skill. Campers need not have any specialized knowledge before coming to camp.
These trips include:
Boundary Waters Canoe Area
Canoe the vast area set aside for travel by non-motorized boats. Trips range in length from three to seven days and give participants a chance to challenge themselves and see beautiful unspoiled wilderness.
Isle Royale National Park
Situated in Lake Superior, Isle Royale is a backpackers haven. Rolling trails provide hikers with beautiful scenery and an opportunity to see moose in their natural habitat.
Superior Hiking Trail
This beautiful trail borders the shore of majestic Lake Superior. This trip offers an excellent introduction to backpacking and ranges in length from three to five days.
Lake Superior Sailing
Mishawaka hires a Coast Guard-certified captain and charters a 38-foot sloop to sail around the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. The hands-on trip offers big-water sailing for all levels of proficiency.
