A Typical Day for a Summer Camp Counselor

Daily Schedule

  • 7:45/8:00 — Wake up - Girls Camp wakes up at 7:45 and Boys Camp wakes up at 8am. After a few stretches and announcements, we head to breakfast. Each cabin group helps set the tables for 2 days every two weeks. After breakfast, counselors assist their campers in cabin-cleanup.
  • 9:45 - 12:00 — Counselors lead or assist with 2-3 different morning periods. Morning periods will be ones you choose to lead or help assist.
  • 12:00 - 12:30 — After the 2nd morning period, most campers take a dip in the lake. Counselors are on the waterfront, supervising these swim periods. This is the most important responsibility we have as counselors: making sure we are always alert, ensuring every camper’s safety when they are in or near the water.
  • 12:30 - 1:00 — After swim period and before lunch, counselors are in and around their cabins, being present with their campers. Counselors are also near the dining hall and staff cabin playing games and interacting with campers.

  • 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM — Lunch in the dining hall.
  • 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM — After eating lunch, counselors return to their cabins with their campers to rest.
  • 2:30 PM – 5:15 PM — Counselors lead or help assist two afternoon periods, with as few as 3-4 campers or as many as 15-20 campers for land and water games. These periods give counselors a great opportunity to help campers learn to play a new game or improve a skill they are developing in a similar morning period.
  • 5:15 PM – 6:30 PM — After their 2nd afternoon period, counselors again supervise swim period. Once swim period is over, counselors are present in and around their cabins as their campers change after swim period, and are engaging all campers during the downtime before dinner.

  • 6:30 PM – 7:00 PM — Dinner in the dining hall. We have barbeques and cookouts 1-2 times a week.
  • 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM — Counselors help lead activities planned for that evening. We often separate by age groups for unique group games, open waterfronts, sporting competitions, and sometimes just having s’mores and taking saunas.
  • 8:30 PM – 9:45 PM — After the evening activity, counselors often watch the campers as they take a quick dip before bed. This is when we all start to wind down and get ready for bed. Counselors are now back with their cabin group, brushing their teeth, making sure their campers get their meds, and checking in with everyone to see how their day went.
  • 9:45 PM – 7:45 AM — SLEEP!
